Italy and France to supply Ukraine with SAMP/T NG air defense systems

Italy and France have reportedly agreed to provide Ukraine with four batteries of the SAMP/T NG air defense system, also known as ‘Mamba’. This next-generation system is produced by the Eurosam consortium and is designed to intercept aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles.

The SAMP/T NG features advanced radar, modernized command and control systems, and an increased operational range of approximately 150 kilometers compared to the 100-kilometer range of the previous version. While the system is often compared to the American Patriot system, some analysts suggest the delivery may serve economic interests for the Western military industry more than it will fundamentally alter the battlefield dynamics in Ukraine.

The procurement, which was discussed between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron, is expected to be financed through European Union loans.
