Italy and India honor WWII Victoria Cross recipient Yashwant Gadge
The Municipality of Montone in Italy and the Indian Embassy held a joint tribute to honor Naik Yashwant Gadge, an Indian soldier and Victoria Cross recipient who fought in Italy during World War II.
Gadge, who served in the 3/5th Maratha Light Infantry, was killed on July 10, 1944, at the age of 24. According to the National Army Museum, he demonstrated extraordinary courage by single-handedly attacking an enemy machine gun post in the Upper Tiber Valley at Morlupo. After neutralizing the post, he was fatally shot by enemy snipers.
The commemorative event featured a virtual interaction between students from Army Public School in Belagavi, India, and Giuseppe Polidori Secondary School in Montone, Italy. The initiative aimed to connect youth through shared history and highlight the enduring friendship between the two nations.
