Italian Defence Deputy Isabella Rauti Highlights NATO Arctic Research on Board Alliance

Italian Deputy Secretary of State for Defence, Senator Isabella Rauti, visited the NATO research vessel Alliance in Tromsø, Norway. She stressed that the Arctic has become a core strategic quadrant for Euro‑Atlantic security and global geopolitical balance, and that NATO’s presence in the High North demonstrates operational and scientific capability.

Rauti outlined Italy’s contribution through its Navy, industry and research institutes, noting the work of the Task Force X‑Arctic and the Arctic Sentry initiative. The vessel Alliance serves as a laboratory for testing unmanned systems, advanced sensors and maritime situational awareness technologies, including seabed mapping and satellite monitoring via Italy’s COSMO‑SkyMed system. She also referenced recent European Hydrographic Services Awards confirming Italian excellence in hydrography and oceanography.

During bilateral talks with Norwegian Defence Secretary Andreas Flåm, Rauti discussed shared security challenges, including Russian posture and Chinese interests in the region, and stressed the importance of joint scientific diplomacy, space and satellite communication projects such as Northlink. The visit underscores Italy and Norway’s cooperation within NATO to safeguard Arctic infrastructure and promote stability.
