Italy and Spain advance nuclear energy policies
European nations are taking significant steps regarding nuclear energy policy. In Italy, the Senate has passed legislation enabling the government of Giorgia Meloni to develop a new regulatory framework for nuclear power production. This marks a potential return to nuclear technology nearly 40 years after the country abandoned it following a 1987 referendum. The new framework will cover construction, operation, safety, and waste management. The government intends to focus on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs), with the first facilities potentially becoming operational by 2033 or 2034.
In Spain, the Almaraz nuclear power plant is set to extend its operations beyond next year, with activity expected to continue at least until June 2030. The decision is viewed as a move to ensure energy stability and recognizes the technical expertise and safety standards maintained by the plant's professionals and the broader Spanish nuclear sector.
