Italy and U.S. sign critical minerals cooperation agreement
Italy and the United States have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in New York to enhance cooperation on critical minerals. The agreement, signed by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, establishes a joint technical working group to manage bilateral collaboration.
The partnership focuses on securing supply chains through information exchange and the mobilization of public and private resources for the extraction, processing, and recycling of essential raw materials. A key priority is the development of fairer market pricing mechanisms for these minerals in collaboration with international partners.
Additionally, the agreement aims to protect strategic industries from control by adversarial nations. The cooperation will emphasize the recycling and recovery of minerals to reduce reliance on new mining. This initiative complements previous efforts, such as Italy's recent accession to the U.S.-led PAX Silica initiative for semiconductor and AI supply chain security.
Separately, SIMEST has strengthened its presence in the U.S. by inaugurating a new office in New York. The agency's participatory portfolio for Italian companies and joint ventures in the U.S. has reached approximately 1 billion euros, supported by a dedicated 500 million euro measure that has seen 400 funding applications totaling 260 million euros.
