Italy and Vatican City adopt electric and hybrid vehicles for sustainability

Italian and Vatican institutions are adopting electric and hybrid technologies to promote environmental sustainability.

The Guardia di Finanza is transitioning to a greener fleet, including approximately 30 hybrid patrol boats produced by the Effebi shipyard. These vessels, such as the V.A.I. 327 Hybrid, can operate in electric mode for silent, low-impact navigation in sensitive areas like the Venice Lagoon and the Ventotene marine reserve. On land, the force is integrating 160 electric vehicles, including Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-208 models, alongside solar panel installations at barracks to reduce energy consumption.

In Vatican City, Fiat has partnered with the Holy See to provide a fleet of approximately 30 lightweight electric vehicles, including the Fiat Topolino and Fiat Professional Tris. These compact, zero-emission vehicles are intended to meet the operational needs of the Vatican Governorate within its limited urban spaces. Fiat CEO Olivier François noted that the Topolino is designed as a tool to serve people while respecting the environment.
