Italy announces 21 films competing for 2027 Oscar nomination

Twenty-one Italian films have been officially entered into the selection process to represent Italy for the International Feature Film Award at the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027). The candidates include works by prominent directors such as Nanni Moretti, with his film ‘Succederà questa notte’, and Gabriele Muccino.

To qualify, films must have had their first theatrical release in Italy or another country outside the United States between October 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026. A special exception was noted for Moretti’s film, which is eligible due to scheduled consecutive previews within the required timeframe.

The selection will be conducted by a committee established at ANICA at the request of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, to vote on and designate the official Italian representative. Following this, the Academy is expected to announce the official shortlists on December 15, 2026, with nominations to be revealed on January 21, 2027, leading up to the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on March 14, 2027.
