Italy announces Arctic defense conference amid global security and market volatility

Italy's Undersecretary of State for Defense, Isabella Rauti, has announced the Second National Defense Conference on the Arctic and Antarctic, scheduled for October 29 in Rome. Rauti emphasized that the Arctic has transitioned from a peripheral region to a central space in global competition, impacting European security, maritime routes, and strategic infrastructure due to rapid climate change.

The upcoming conference aims to expand the scope from a national discussion to an international dimension, including a focus on Antarctica. This follows the presentation of the new Italian Arctic Policy, which updates 2015 guidelines to place greater emphasis on security dimensions.

Separately, the XV Commodity Agrifood event, organized by Areté and Unione Italiana Food, warned of significant volatility in agrifood markets leading into 2027. Experts cited a combination of geopolitical uncertainty, regulatory shifts, and frequent weather shocks as primary drivers of risk.

Key commodities such as cereals, sugar, rice, milk, and cocoa are expected to face deficits or supply tensions. Specifically, grain markets are pressured by declining production and Black Sea port blockades, while the sugar market is projected to return to a deficit in 2026/27 due to production shifts in Brazil and weather issues in India.
