Italy approves AI integration into national education curricula

Italy's Council of Ministers has approved a legislative decree to align national regulations with European Union standards regarding Artificial Intelligence. This framework addresses the powers of national AI authorities and the application of AI across various sectors, including healthcare, public administration, professional work, and education.

Under the direction of the Ministry of Education and Merit, AI will be integrated into educational curricula as both a subject of study and a tool for pedagogical innovation. Key measures include updating national guidelines for the second cycle of schooling to incorporate generative AI and advanced technologies. AI will also be included in civic education to address ethical profiles and digital citizenship.

To support these changes, the government will establish regional technical-ethical committees to provide pedagogical guidance, protect fundamental rights, and ensure data protection. Additionally, a €100 million fund has been allocated for a stable training plan for teachers. This initiative aims to address digital well-being, mitigate risks such as algorithmic opacity and social media abuse, and equip educators to manage the responsible use of AI.
