Italy approves decree to increase domestic oil and gas production

The Italian government has approved a decree aimed at increasing domestic oil and gas production to reduce reliance on energy imports. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that the nation should utilize its own resources rather than purchasing energy from abroad.

To expedite the process, the government will appoint commissioners to accelerate permit and concession procedures for hydrocarbon exploration and extraction. The plan targets both onshore areas, such as Val d’Agri, and offshore zones, including the Argo-Cassiopeia field in the Strait of Sicily. The government argues these measures will lower energy costs for households and businesses while strengthening national energy security.

The decision has faced opposition from political groups, such as the Alliance for Greens and Left, who claim the executive is favoring the interests of the oil and gas industry.
