Italy approves food technologists for official safety controls

The State-Regions Conference has approved a historic agreement regarding the integration of Food Technologists into official food safety controls in Italy. This agreement, reached on October 1, 2026, implements EU Regulation 2017/625 and allows regional and local authorities, such as ASL hygiene and nutrition services, to utilize these professionals to monitor the entire production chain.

The measure ends a 26-year wait since the establishment of the National Order. Supported by the Ministry of Health and Undersecretary Marcello Gemmato, the guidelines enable Food Technologists to inspect processes including the production, transformation, preservation, distribution, and service of food and beverages. This integration aims to strengthen public health protection and increase consumer transparency.
