Italy approves new caregiver legislation and monthly support

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill regarding caregivers, introducing new regulations and a monthly contribution that could reach up to 400 euros starting in 2027. The legislation aims to provide recognition and protections for those providing care, though critics argue the measure is insufficient.

To qualify for the economic support, individuals must live with the person they assist and provide at least 91 hours of care per week. Additionally, the caregiver's annual gross employment income must not exceed 3,000 euros, and the ISEE (Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator) must be below 25,000 euros. Critics have raised concerns that these rigid requirements, combined with limited funding, may exclude many families in need and fail to address the long-term pension security of those forced to leave the workforce to provide care.

At the local level in Corigliano Rossano, Councilor Daniela Romano addressed delays regarding a municipal motion to recognize caregivers. She noted that the motion was postponed to allow for the legislative process of the new national bill to unfold, expressing satisfaction with the national government's move to discipline the matter for the first time in Italy.
