Italy authorities uncover illegal waste sites in San Gemini and Sant’Antimo

Authorities in Italy have uncovered two separate instances of illegal waste management and unauthorized dumping.

In San Gemini, the Carabinieri Forestali discovered approximately 80 cubic meters of various waste materials, including metals, plastics, vehicle parts, and electronic waste (WEEE), accumulated directly on the ground across a 200-square-meter area. The investigation revealed that a waste transport company was operating without the necessary permits for intermediate storage or disposal. The company's legal representative has been referred to the Prosecutor's Office of Terni on suspicion of illegal waste management.

In Sant’Antimo, a joint operation involving the Local Police and the Italian Army under the ‘Strade Sicure – Terra dei Fuochi’ initiative led to the seizure of an agricultural area exceeding 1,000 square meters. The site, which was intended for fruit trees, had been converted into an uncontrolled waste dump near railway tracks, posing a significant fire risk to local infrastructure. Authorities utilized military drones and imagery intelligence (IMINT) to monitor the territory and identify environmental criticalities.
