Italy authorities warn of WhatsApp and SMS fraud schemes

Italian authorities, including the Polizia Postale, have issued warnings regarding several digital fraud schemes targeting citizens through WhatsApp and SMS.

A recent WhatsApp scam involves fraudulent messages that appear to come from known contacts. These messages often invite users to vote for a child in a dance competition or another online contest. By clicking the provided link, users are prompted to enter their phone number and a verification code. This allows criminals to hijack the victim's WhatsApp account to impersonate them and solicit money from friends and family.

Additionally, a smishing campaign has been identified involving fake SMS messages regarding alleged speeding violations. These messages claim a traffic law violation has occurred and urge the recipient to view the report via a link. These fraudulent sites are designed to mimic official portals to steal personal information, banking details, or other sensitive data.

Authorities advise citizens to avoid clicking links in suspicious messages, never share verification codes, and use only official institutional websites to check for actual fines or account issues.
