Italy automotive market grows in August 2026
The Italian automotive market showed growth in August 2026, with new car registrations increasing by approximately 3.2% compared to the previous year. Total registrations for the first eight months of the year reached over 1.1 million units, an 8.5% increase year-on-year. However, the pace of growth has slowed compared to the stronger performance seen in the first half of the year.
A significant shift in vehicle propulsion is occurring. Hybrid technology continues to dominate, accounting for nearly 47% of the market, including both mild and full hybrids. Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) saw an acceleration, reaching a 12% market share, while battery electric vehicles (BEV) maintained a share of approximately 6.4% to 8% depending on the specific reporting period. Conversely, traditional diesel engines have seen a sharp decline, falling below 10% of the market share.
In terms of specific models and brands, the Fiat Pandina remains the most popular vehicle in Italy, maintaining a significant lead in sales. Stellantis continues to hold a strong position in the market, with its brands capturing roughly 30% of total registrations. The rental sector is also seeing notable growth, particularly in short-term rentals, which surged by 58% in August.
Additionally, the automotive trade sector reported positive trends in the first five months of 2026, with imports rising by 9.5% and exports increasing by 3.2%.
