Italy autumn travel: hiking and nature destinations

Various regions in Italy offer diverse outdoor activities and cultural experiences during the autumn season. In Tuscany, the Monte Amiata area near Bagni San Filippo features free natural thermal pools at Fosso Bianco, where visitors can enjoy the landscape and local villages, though caution is advised regarding slippery terrain.

In the Garfagnana region, October marks the chestnut harvest season and the reopening of 'metati' (traditional drying structures) used to produce Garfagnana DOP chestnut flour. Nearby, Isola Santa provides scenic lakeside views and forest trails. In the Brescia province, visitors can explore Lake Iseo, the Franciacorta wine region, and the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Brescia, such as the Santa Giulia museum.

Other notable routes include the Cammino dei Briganti in the Valle del Salto, a 108-kilometer hiking trail starting in Sante Marie that allows for slow-paced exploration of mountain villages. Travelers are encouraged to prepare for changing weather by carrying appropriate footwear and waterproof clothing.
