Italy bank deposits reach 1.163 trillion euros

Italian household bank deposits have reached approximately 1.163 trillion euros as of late May, marking a 28.3% nominal increase over the last decade. While total deposits rose from 906 billion euros ten years ago, the real growth is significantly lower when adjusted for inflation.

Regional data shows a high concentration of wealth. Lombardy holds the largest volume of deposits with nearly 239 billion euros, accounting for roughly 20% of the national total. Other significant regions include Lazio with 122 billion euros and Veneto with 105 billion euros. In contrast, Valle d'Aosta holds the lowest total at approximately 2.8 billion euros.

At the regional level, Trentino-Alto Adige recorded deposits exceeding 30 billion euros, a 43.2% increase over ten years. The province of Bolzano leads Italy in per capita deposits, averaging 30,393 euros per resident. Trentino follows with 13.778 billion euros in total deposits.

Despite the accumulation of liquidity, the cost of managing bank accounts has risen, with average annual expenses increasing by 23% from 82.2 to 101.1 euros. While holding cash provides security and immediate availability, experts note that excess liquidity can lose purchasing power during periods of high inflation. However, Bank of Italy data suggests a shift toward managed savings and securities for 2025.
