Italy bank deposits reveal significant regional wealth gap

Data from May 2026, processed by Isnec and Withub using Bank of Italy figures, reveals significant regional disparities in bank deposits across Italy. The national average per capita stands at 19,812 euros, while the North averages 22,702 euros. In contrast, the Islands report 13,049 euros per capita.

Monza e Brianza ranks eighth nationally with 24,499 euros per capita. Within Lombardy, provinces such as Milan, Sondrio, and Lecco report higher deposits than Monza e Brianza. Trentino-Alto Adige leads the country with 27,737 euros per capita, while Bolzano holds the top provincial spot at 30,804 euros.

At the lower end of the spectrum, Sicily and Calabria report 12,444 euros and 14,202 euros per capita, respectively. Despite these gaps, data since 2021 shows that lower-income areas are growing faster: deposits in the Islands increased by 11.1% and the South by 9.4%, compared to a 1.3% increase in the North.
