Italy Boosts Middle East Role with New Israel-Lebanon Talks and Expanded Military Presence

Italy is amplifying its involvement in the Middle East, overseeing a range of military missions that include the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, anti‑ISIS training operations with the Peshmerga in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, and air‑base support in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. These deployments aim to strengthen Italy’s diplomatic and operational influence in a region marked by ongoing conflict and humanitarian challenges.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that Italy will host a new round of Israel‑Lebanon dialogue on 4 August, following July talks that helped initiate the Israeli Defence Forces’ withdrawal from contested border zones. At the same time, Italy reaffirmed its NATO commitments, planning to raise defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, underscoring a broader strategy of building bridges rather than barriers in the region.
