Italy car insurance costs rise relative to European neighbors

Data from the Segugio.it Insurance Observatory reveals a growing gap between Italian car insurance premiums and those in other major European economies. As of September 2026, Italian motorists face significantly higher costs for civil liability coverage compared to their counterparts in Germany, Spain, and France.

In 2024, the average net premium in Italy was approximately 320 euros. This is 44.1% higher than the weighted average of Spain, France, and Germany, which stands at 222 euros. Specifically, German premiums averaged 275 euros, while Spain and France recorded much lower costs at 197 euros and 194 euros, respectively.

While national prices show signs of potential stabilization, regional disparities persist, particularly in Southern Italy. In Calabria, the regional average of 497.65 euros exceeds the national average of 487.44 euros. Within Calabria, Crotone remains the most expensive province with an average of 556.18 euros, while Cosenza is the most affordable at 463.35 euros.
