Via Appia Antica celebrated through cultural events across Italy

Various cultural and commemorative events were held across Italy to celebrate the Via Appia Antica, a UNESCO World Heritage site. During the Appia Day celebrations, several initiatives focused on the historical, landscape, and cultural value of the ancient Roman road.

In the Irpinia and Sannio regions, the project ‘L’Appia Antica. Una via per l’impero’ concluded its itinerant series with a cultural meeting in Venticano. This series, involving the University of Sannio and various local municipalities, aimed to present the road as a collective site of memory and culture rather than just an engineering feat. A final major conference is scheduled for November 2026 in Rome.

Other celebrations included a classic car tour titled ‘Regina Viarum Hirpiniae’ through the province of Avellino, featuring vintage red vehicles traveling through archaeological sites like Aeclanum. In Ostuni, the ‘Traiana Viva’ event focused on walking and exploring the Via Traiana. Additionally, in Ariccia, hundreds of visitors participated in trekking activities to highlight the area as a key historical station along the route.
