Italy celebrates Grandparents' Day across various communities

Grandparents' Day was celebrated across various Italian communities on October 2, highlighting the significant social and economic role of the elderly in modern family structures.

In Italy, there are more than 12 million grandparents. According to Istat data, they provide essential support to families, with 40% of children under six being cared for by them and 96% of grandparents providing economic assistance to their households. This demographic serves as a vital link for transmitting traditions, values, and memories to younger generations.

Local celebrations included community lunches in Sirignano, intergenerational workshops in Oggiono involving storytelling and gardening, and educational road safety projects in Amato. In Fasano, service organizations like the Lions and Leo Clubs visited elderly care facilities to host art workshops and musical entertainment, fostering connections between different age groups.
