Italy Chamber approves caregiver recognition bill

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has passed the first reading of bill no. 2789, which aims to provide legal recognition and protection for family caregivers assisting relatives with disabilities or chronic conditions. The legislation, promoted by the Meloni government and Disability Minister Alessandra Locatelli, passed with 153 votes in favor, 105 against, and 4 abstentions.

Key provisions include a potential monthly economic contribution of up to 400 euros, to be paid quarterly based on available resources. However, the bill faces significant criticism from opposition parties and caregiver associations. Critics argue that the requirements are too restrictive, specifically citing a low annual gross income threshold of 3,000 euros and the total allocation of 260 million euros starting in 2027, which many deem insufficient.

ADICU APS, a representative organization, stated that formal recognition is only a first step and must lead to a systemic model of public responsibility rather than relying on individual sacrifice. The bill now moves to the Senate for further examination.
