Italy: Clashes erupt in Rome, Turin, and Bologna during protests
Mass demonstrations organized across several Italian cities against the rising cost of living and support for ongoing wars resulted in clashes between protesters and police.
In Rome, confrontations occurred near Termini railway station after a minority of protesters threw bottles and firecrackers at police, prompting the use of water cannons. Earlier in the day, approximately 50 participants managed to force open a gate and enter the Colosseum. Two protesters were injured during the Rome demonstrations, and authorities identified 200 participants.
In Turin, police used batons and tear gas after members of the Ascatassuna social center attempted to alter the agreed-upon march route. Clashes were also reported in the center of Bologna. While tensions were recorded in Milan, no vandalism or looting was reported there.
The Italian Ministry of Interior announced that approximately 1,000 people were taken into custody during the nationwide mobilizations.
