Italy: Coldiretti considers EU class action over ultra-processed foods
The agricultural organization Coldiretti is evaluating a class action against European Union policies regarding ultra-processed foods. The goal is to bring the matter before the Court of Justice of the European Union, arguing that current EU policies favor the economic interests of large food multinationals over the health rights of citizens, particularly children.
This move follows the Coldiretti/Censis report, which highlights significant public concern regarding food health. The report indicates that 78% of Italians want the EU to intervene to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods, and 81% support banning such products from collective catering, including schools and hospitals. Furthermore, 85% of Italians favor introducing food education programs in schools from early childhood to foster better long-term health habits.
In a separate industry development, Assobibe, the association representing non-alcoholic beverage producers, has called on Italian institutions to permanently cancel the proposed Sugar Tax in the upcoming Budget Law. The association argues that the tax, scheduled for 2027, is creating economic uncertainty and blocking over 1 billion euros in investments.
