Trieste commemorates 72nd anniversary of return to Italy
Trieste held solemn ceremonies on October 26 to mark the 72nd anniversary of the city's return to Italian administration. The commemorations included formal flag-raising and lowering ceremonies at the Pili in Piazza Unità d’Italia, featuring a military detachment, the Air Force Fanfare, and the City of Trieste banner, which is decorated with the Gold Medal for Military Valor.
The event honored the historical transition from the Allied military government—which had administered the Free Territory of Trieste since the end of World War II—to the Italian Republic, following the 1954 London Memorandum signed by Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Yugoslavia.
Local authorities, including Mayor Roberto Dipiazza and Regional Councilor Pierpaolo Roberti, participated in the rites. Roberti noted the date's significance in defining Italy's post-war borders and completing the national territory.
