Italy commemorates major natural disasters through cultural initiatives

Various regions in Italy are organizing cultural and educational programs to mark the anniversaries of significant natural disasters.

In Friuli Venezia Giulia, the exhibition ‘RINASCITE. Da Leonardo da Vinci al contemporaneo’ will be held at Villa Manin in Passariano di Codroipo from November 14, 2026, to February 21, 2027. Curated by Giovanni C. F. Villa and Giovanni Damiani, the exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1976 earthquake. The project explores the concept of rebirth and the human capacity to transform catastrophe into a generative principle, using a mix of historical documentation, ancient masterpieces, and contemporary works.

In Trentino, the MUSE museum is coordinating initiatives to mark the 60th anniversary of the 1966 floods, which caused severe landslides and over 20 deaths. In collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection, forests, and fauna of the Autonomous Province of Trento, the program includes scientific demonstrations, school workshops, and interactive simulations. Activities such as the ‘Geoshow’ and flood alert role-playing exercises aim to educate the public on natural risks and territorial defense strategies.
