Italy commemorates Resistance fighters and press freedom martyrs

Commemorative ceremonies were held in Italy to honor individuals who resisted the fascist regime during World War II.

In Conselice, officials marked the 20th anniversary of the inauguration of the ‘Pedalina’ monument. The monument commemorates clandestine printers who were executed by fascist forces between September 30 and October 1, 1944. Local leaders, including Mayor Andrea Sangiorgi and representatives from the National Federation of Italian Printing (FNSI), reflected on the historical importance of press freedom and the courage of those who risked their lives to oppose regime propaganda.

In Pozzaglio, a ceremony was held to mark the 82nd anniversary of the execution of partisan Luigi Ruggeri, known by his battle name ‘Carmen’. A former member of the Guardia di Finanza, Ruggeri was arrested following a denunciation, tortured, and executed by fascist militias in Cremona. The event included speeches from local mayors, representatives of the Guardia di Finanza, and ANPI, with students participating to discuss the contemporary relevance of the values of the Resistance.
