Italy commemorates victims of immigration shipwreck

Various Italian municipalities and organizations are organizing commemorations to mark the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Immigration, observed on October 3. The date honors the anniversary of the 2013 Lampedusa shipwreck, which resulted in the deaths of 368 people.

In Pesaro, a public event organized by Labirinto cooperativa sociale will feature a procession through the historic center. Participants will carry the ‘Croce di Lampedusa’, constructed from shipwreck remains, and ten floral wreaths to be cast into the Adriatic Sea. The event involves numerous local associations, religious groups, and civil society organizations to promote the principle of inclusive hospitality.

Other initiatives include cultural programs such as the screening of the documentary ‘Cutro 94… and more’ for high school students and a concert titled ‘Note di speranza’. This musical performance will utilize instruments crafted from wood salvaged from migrant boats, aiming to transform the memory of the tragedy into a message of hope.
