Italy completes hydrogeological risk mitigation projects
Infrastructure projects aimed at reducing hydrogeological and landslide risks have reached significant milestones in Italy. In Frascineto, construction of the Clavaro channel is complete. This intervention targets an area classified at the maximum hazard level, R4, to mitigate risks from increasingly extreme meteorological events and intense rainfall. Local authorities have already applied for funding to extend the channel toward the Provincial Road overpass to address remaining vulnerabilities.
In the Spriana landslide area, work has progressed on a structural system designed to manage a potential landslide movement estimated at 70 million cubic meters. Key developments include the mechanized excavation of a bypass tunnel, which will allow the Mallero river's flow to be diverted around the unstable zone. An intake structure has also been built upstream to intercept and direct water into the bypass. Ongoing work includes finishing the tunnel lining and constructing an aeration gallery to ensure hydraulic functionality. These measures are intended to protect the residents of Sondrio, Spriana, and Valmalenco.
