Italy completes restoration of ancient Roman aqueduct bridge in Nettuno

Restoration and enhancement works have concluded at the Torre Astura archaeological and monumental complex in Nettuno. The project, carried out by the Superintendency as part of the PNRR Caput Mundi initiative, focused on the restoration and consolidation of the ancient Roman aqueduct bridge, which had suffered deterioration from weather and sea exposure.

In addition to the bridge, works included stabilizing the vaulted structures within the residential sector of the Roman villa. The complex, which originated at the end of the Republican era and was expanded during the Imperial period, originally featured living spaces, a fish farm, and a port. The 130-meter aqueduct bridge served to connect the mainland to the maritime sector, ensuring a freshwater supply.

The site features a blend of Roman remains and a medieval tower, which became a symbol of the location. Historically, the site is linked to Conradin of Swabia, who sought refuge there in 1268 before being captured.
