Italy completes social welfare projects in San Giovanni Galermo and Palermo

In Italy, two separate urban regeneration projects have been completed to repurpose public buildings for social welfare.

In San Giovanni Galermo, the former Padre Santo Di Guardo school has been converted into a residential facility for 16 vulnerable elderly residents. Funded by nearly 1 million euros from the PNRR, the project includes eight housing units, accessible apartments for people with disabilities, common areas, and a new parking lot. Mayor Enrico Trantino noted that the investment aims to transform unused public spaces into locations that meet concrete community needs.

In Palermo, a building previously confiscated from the mafia at via Perrotta 21 has been transformed into a socio-educational center for at-risk youth. The project, costing approximately 1.35 million euros, includes funding from the Ministry of the Interior. The facility provides temporary housing, training workshops, and job placement support to help young adults from the criminal justice system reintegrate into society. Mayor Roberto Lagalla described the project as a concrete signal of legality and social value.
