Italy considers ban on intensive octopus and tuna farming

A new legislative proposal has been introduced in the Italian Parliament aimed at banning the intensive farming of octopuses and tuna. Presented by Deputy Devis Dori of the Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra party, the bill seeks to prevent the development of intensive aquaculture facilities for these specific marine species.

The initiative focuses on two primary concerns: animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Octopuses are noted for their complex nervous systems, including learning and problem-solving capabilities, which raises ethical questions regarding their treatment in intensive settings. Additionally, because both octopuses and tuna are carnivorous, their farming requires feed derived from other fish, which increases pressure on marine resources and biodiversity.

This proposal aligns with a broader international debate involving European institutions and animal welfare organizations, such as Compassion in World Farming, regarding the impact of carnivorous aquaculture on marine ecosystems.
