Italy tourism sees record summer 2026 growth

Italy is experiencing a robust summer 2026 tourism season, characterized by high occupancy rates and significant economic activity. Major cities like Rome and Naples are seeing record-breaking visitor numbers, with Naples alone expecting over 500,000 visitors during the Ferragosto period, generating an estimated 150 million euros in local revenue.

While coastal and urban destinations remain popular, there is a notable shift in traveler preferences. Many tourists are opting for mountain retreats in the Alps and Apennines to escape intense heat, and a growing number of travelers are seeking quieter, less crowded locations to avoid the peak Ferragosto crowds. This trend toward ‘silence as luxury’ is driving interest in September travel to save costs and enjoy milder weather.

Economically, the sector shows strength despite rising costs. The seaside tourism industry is projected to reach a value of 30 billion euros. However, inflation has impacted travel budgets, with costs for dining and accommodation rising by approximately 3.4%. In the food sector, while general inflation is moderate, high demand during summer peaks is driving significant consumption of fresh seasonal products.
