Italy cracks down on illegal construction sites in Vietri sul Mare and Augusta

In Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast, police and military forces seized a 300‑square‑metre illegal construction site just metres from the beach. The operation, led by commander Gerardo Varone, found work on pavement and new water and electricity networks carried out without any permits, violating strict coastal protection rules. The Salerno court later confirmed the seizure and referred the landowner and the contractor to the justice system.

In the Sicilian town of Augusta, demolition began of a 44‑year‑old illegal building that had been declared unsafe and in breach of urban‑planning distance regulations. The structure, abandoned for decades, was ordered removed after a court ruling confirmed its non‑compliance. Residents have called for the cleared area to be turned into a small public green space with landscaping and recreation facilities.

Both actions reflect heightened enforcement of Italy’s building‑code and environmental regulations.
