Italy cricket team eyes ICC Challenge League spot ahead of 2027 World Cup

After a historic appearance at the T20 World Cup, Italy’s cricket side regrouped at Rome’s Giulio Onesti Olympic Preparation Centre and is set to compete in the final round of the ICC Challenge League in Tanzania from 7‑19 August. The Italians sit second in the league with 16 points, two behind leaders Uganda and four ahead of Hong Kong China. The top two teams will advance to the 2027 Qualifier Playoff, which feeds the ODI World Cup scheduled for October‑November 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. CONI president Luciano Buonfiglio reiterated Olympic Committee support, while federation commissioner Gianfranco Ravà described the period as “positive” for both men’s and women’s cricket. Team manager Peter Giacomo Di Venuto highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent to sustain future success.
