Italy crime and justice statistics show shift toward property offenses

Statistical data regarding crime and justice in Italy shows a significant shift in criminal activity over the last century. Between 1891 and 1895, annual homicides averaged nearly 2,000, whereas the period between 2020 and 2024 saw an average of just over 300 per year.

Property crimes now constitute the majority of reported offenses, representing over 60% of crimes in 2024. This increase is attributed to greater economic prosperity and urban growth. While vehicle and residential thefts have decreased significantly over the last thirty years, the 2024 rate for residential burglaries stood at 264 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Regarding the judicial system, the rate of litigation—measured by civil proceedings filed in relation to the population—has seen fluctuations, with a notable increase beginning in the 1970s. Additionally, the data notes developments in juvenile detention and support measures for incarcerated mothers.
