Italy crime rates show national decline in 2025

Reported crime statistics for 2025 indicate a national decrease in reported crimes in Italy, falling by 1.8% to approximately 2.36 million incidents compared to 2024. This marks the first decline after four consecutive years of growth. The reduction is driven primarily by a drop in thefts and robberies, though there has been an increase in fraud, cybercrime, and arrests of minors.

In Sicily, eight out of nine provinces reported a decrease in reported crimes, with Catania and Palermo seeing significant declines. Conversely, Syracuse experienced an increase. Nationally, Milan, Florence, and Rome recorded the highest crime rates per resident, while Oristano recorded the lowest.

Regional analysis in Caserta shows a 4.8% decrease in reported crimes, placing the province 50th nationally. However, local commentary notes that the ranking is purely quantitative and does not account for crime severity, highlighting that while fraud and sexual violence rates are low, the province remains high in organized and mafia-related crime.
