Italy cyclist fatalities reach 189 in 2026 amid calls for safety laws
The ASAPS-SAPIDATA Observatory reports that 189 cyclists have died in Italy so far in 2026, a 4% increase compared to the first nine months of 2025. September was identified as the most tragic month of the year with 36 fatalities. Lombardy has recorded the highest number of deaths with 37, followed by Veneto with 28 and Emilia Romagna with 25.
In response to the rising number of fatalities, Deputy Roberto Pella has called for the acceleration of a legislative proposal aimed at improving road safety for cyclists. The proposal, which has received support from various political groups and transport commission leaders, seeks to prioritize cyclist protection to support sustainable mobility and prevent further loss of life.
