Italy data center numbers double amid energy and local concerns

The number of active or planned data centers in Italy has nearly doubled in one year, rising from 146 to 262. This rapid expansion is accompanied by significant investment projections, with an estimated €25 billion expected over the next three years.

Energy consumption is a growing concern. While data centers accounted for approximately 2% of Italy's national electricity consumption in 2024 (5.8 TWh), projections from the Politecnico di Milano Observatory suggest this could rise to between 7% and 12% of the national total by 2035.

Local opposition is emerging in response to these developments. In Travagliato, Brescia, a proposed €11 million data center project by East Gate Srl has faced significant public protest. Residents have expressed concerns regarding environmental impacts, including heat emissions, water usage, noise pollution, and land consumption. The project, which would cover 130,000 square meters, has led to demonstrations at municipal council meetings.
