Italy debates access to fertility preservation and assisted reproduction
Regional and civic initiatives in Italy are addressing growing disparities in access to fertility treatments and cryopreservation. In the Lazio region, a new budget measure establishes a 300,000 euro experimental fund for 2027. This fund aims to support residents aged 18 to 40 facing non-oncological infertility, providing up to 3,000 euros for egg cryopreservation and up to 1,000 euros for seminal fluid preservation at public facilities.
In Genoa, the “Pma per tutte” (PMA for everyone) popular initiative, promoted by the Luca Coscioni Association, has surpassed 50,000 signatures. The proposal seeks to expand access to medically assisted procreation to single women and female couples. The movement follows a period where the Constitutional Court has deferred legislative decisions on the matter to Parliament, amid concerns regarding the accessibility of such services through the public health system.
