Italy debates ecological transition and waste management

In Italy, discussions regarding economic and environmental models are emerging across different sectors. Father Dario Bossi and the Comboni missionaries are advocating for the ‘disarmament of the economy’ to facilitate a transition toward integral ecology. This movement seeks to move away from unlimited development models, citing local environmental risks such as PFAS contamination in the Veneto region, in favor of an economy focused on community health, the environment, and labor.

Simultaneously, in Tuscany, a debate has surfaced regarding the expansion of waste incineration capacity. Proposals to increase the capacity of the Foci incinerator in Poggibonsi from 70,000 to 110,000 tons annually are being scrutinized. While regional authorities suggest these expansions are necessary to ensure self-sufficiency in waste treatment by 2030, critics and organizations like Rifondazione Comunista question whether such increases align with regional circular economy goals and if there will be sufficient non-recyclable waste to sustain the expanded thermal treatment system.
