Italy debates foreign policy amid Mediterranean and Red Sea security concerns
Italian Deputy Defense Minister Isabella Rauti has emphasized the growing geostrategic importance of an ‘extended Mediterranean’ in response to regional instabilities. Speaking at a conference in Custonaci, Rauti noted that conflicts in the Red Sea and the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait directly impact Italy’s economic security, trade routes, and energy supplies.
To address these threats, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has requested that EU High Representative Kaja Kallas strengthen the Aspides mission. Rauti highlighted the recent decision to have the Italian vessel Nave Bergamini escort the merchant ship Jolly Oro through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait as a necessary measure, though she called for a more unified European effort to combat hybrid warfare and instability.
In a separate critique of the current administration's approach, Movimento 5 Stelle leader Giuseppe Conte argued that Italy’s foreign policy has become passive and acquiescent. During a conference in Rome, Conte claimed the Meloni government lacks a clear international initiative and suggested that Italy should pursue more courageous, cooperative security projects based on disarmament and international law rather than relying solely on military deterrence.
