Italy debates gender-based violence protections following murder

Italy is facing intense political debate regarding the effectiveness of government measures to combat gender-based violence following the murder of 39-year-old Tania Terrin in the Veneto region. Despite the victim's family having reported the perpetrator to authorities multiple times, the incident has prompted calls for better protection for those who file complaints.

Political figures have offered differing perspectives on the solution. The Democratic Party has called for more robust support for anti-violence centers and improved protection measures, while Lega Senator Giulia Bongiorni suggested that instead of new laws, the focus should be on the proper application of existing ones and better training for law enforcement and the judiciary. In a separate development aimed at prevention, the Carabinieri have renewed a memorandum of understanding with the non-profit organization ‘Donne al traguardo’ for an additional two years. The agreement aims to improve collaboration between law enforcement and anti-violence centers, facilitating direct communication between victims and service operators and promoting awareness actions.
