Italy debates healthcare funding and resource allocation
The Italian government has reported a significant increase in healthcare funding, with the national health fund rising from 126 billion euros in 2022 to 143 billion euros. This 13% increase includes 7 billion euros for healthcare infrastructure and 3.7 billion euros aimed at reducing waiting lists. Additional measures include salary adjustments for medical staff, 450 million euros for new hires, and the expansion of digital health services.
However, political debate continues regarding the sufficiency of these funds. Domenico De Santis of the Democratic Party has argued that the current budget is inadequate, claiming that at least 6.8 billion euros in additional resources are required over the next three years to protect the constitutional right to healthcare. He noted that regional governors from across the political spectrum have expressed concerns regarding the sustainability of the national health system.
