Italy debates military security expansion and urban management

In Italy, discussions regarding public security and the role of the military are intensifying. In Rome, calls have been made for a coordinated emergency plan to address complex investigations, potential political affiliations among military personnel, and staffing shortages within the municipal government. Proposals suggest the need for a transparency protocol to manage public trust during investigations and administrative checks to ensure the neutrality of armed forces.

Simultaneously, the Lega party is advocating for the expansion of the ‘Strade Sicure’ operation. The proposal aims to increase the number of military personnel supporting law enforcement from 6,800 to 10,000 nationwide. This expansion would target 61 provincial capitals currently without the service, including Pesaro. Matteo Salvini has stated that implementing this plan would require approximately 100 million euros in additional annual funding to increase the state's presence in sensitive areas and transport hubs.
