Italy defense spending and Ukraine war debate

Debates regarding the Russia-Ukraine war and the necessity of a ceasefire are increasingly impacting European political and economic landscapes. The conflict is closely linked to significant increases in European rearmament spending, which impacts national budgets and may reduce funding for welfare and climate initiatives.

In Italy, political discussions have emerged regarding the consistency of leadership positions on military aid. While the Movimento 5 Stelle has recently criticized rearmament and military support for Ukraine, historical data shows that during Giuseppe Conte’s tenure as Prime Minister between 2018 and 2021, Italian military spending increased. According to NATO calculations, defense spending as a percentage of GDP rose from approximately 1.2% in June 2018 to 1.58% by the end of his mandate. In absolute terms, spending grew from 21.7 billion euros to 26.4 billion euros, representing a roughly 20% increase over two and a half years.
