Italy delegates new regulatory powers for sustainable nuclear energy

The Italian government has been granted new powers regarding sustainable nuclear energy through Law No. 169, published on September 30, 2026. The law, which takes effect on October 15, 2026, mandates that the government define a new national regulatory framework for nuclear energy within twelve months.

The delegation includes the authority to issue legislative decrees covering several key areas: the production and use of sustainable nuclear energy in Italy, the manufacturing and reprocessing of nuclear fuel, and the management of radioactive waste and spent fuel. Additionally, the framework will address the decommissioning and dismantling of existing plants, as well as research and development in both fission and fusion technologies.
