Italian courts rule on Brazilian extradition requests

The Italian judiciary has issued significant rulings regarding two separate extradition requests from Brazil.

In one case, the Court of Appeal in Rome has postponed the trial concerning the extradition of former Brazilian deputy Carla Zambelli to November 24. The defense requested the delay to review documentation provided by Brazilian authorities regarding the conditions of the Colmeia Women's Penitentiary in the Federal District. Zambelli faces convictions in Brazil for illegal firearm possession and unlawful constraint following a 2022 incident in São Paulo.

In a separate matter, the Court of Appeal in Catanzaro denied the extradition request for Eduardo Tagliaferro, a former aide to Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Tagliaferro is accused in Brazil of leaking confidential communications from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to the press. The Italian court cited concerns regarding the impartiality of the proceedings in Brazil, noting that Justice Moraes's involvement in various stages of the investigation raised questions about procedural safeguards and the right to a fair trial. The court also revoked the travel ban on Tagliaferro and ordered the return of his seized documents.
