Italy dental study reveals 50% of adults have lost at least one tooth

A recent study conducted by Mentadent on 2,000 citizens aged 18 to 75 reveals that one in two adults in Italy has lost at least one natural tooth. The research, presented in Rome during the 46th Dental Prevention Month promoted by Andi (Associazione Nazionale Dentisti Italiani) and Mentadent, highlights a growing concern among younger populations; 26% of 30-year-olds have already lost at least one tooth.

Findings indicate significant psychological impacts, with 50% of those who lost a tooth reporting anxiety and approximately 30% feeling embarrassment. While 80% of respondents believe prevention is worthwhile, a cultural gap exists as only 40% feel confident in the specific behaviors required to protect their dental health.

Key causes identified include oral pathologies such as cavities and gum disease, alongside factors like aging, general health conditions, diet, smoking, and oral hygiene habits. The report also notes obstacles to dental care, including difficulties in accessing regular check-ups and continuous treatment paths.
